Númenor’s overwhelming strength forced Sauron to surrender and corrupt the kingdom from within. By corrupting King Ar-Pharazôn, Sauron caused Númenor’s divine downfall (Akallabêth). Some Númenorians later served him in the south, including Mordor. After the fall, the Faithful led by Elendil and his sons founded Gondor and Arnor, continuing resistance. Despite the lack of open war, Númenor’s superiority was unquestioned.
